Manga Rec - My Death Flags Show No Sign of Ending

A guilty pleasure of mine is the type of manga with a male lead in the body of an evil noble. What started this was none other than the manga stated in the title. At first, I expected it to follow the evil-to-suddenly-good progression that most take from the start. However, I was pleasantly surprised by one aspect of the story: the words the lead wants to say & the words that come out of his mouth don't line up.

This, essentially, makes him a tsundere (minus the romantic feelings).

This makes the manga better in every conceivable way. Instead of following the usual trend of completely erasing the ego & traits of the previous host, having some aspects left over creates a unique situation. Even if the impact is lost over time.

While I won't spoil the story, like most in the genre, it doesn't aim to tell a deep narrative or explore different ideas, which may be a turn-off for those who are looking for something with more bite. I would not hold any expectations diving into this one, unfortunately.

I would deduct points from the manga for having the lead use knowledge of his past life to get an advantage in his current one, instead of working hard to learn about the world he finds himself in. However, it isn't as extreme as some other manga where the protagonist uses magic metal sludge to make an AK-47. No, I am not joking, that is a real manga.

While the initial art style & character designs are nothing to write home about, as it is the standard level of quality found in most isekai fantasy manga, that isn't to say it is bad & does not have its moments. The lack of background art, in theory, allows for greater character focus before showing a more detailed page. Normally, this would create a more impactful moment, but since most pages lack background & more detailed pages aren't that impressive, it leaves the few pages that are well designed in isolation.

Especially of note, most detail can be found in the design of buildings & rooms, as opposed to the characters & natural environments. In my opinion, a moment on a page is made more impactful by the facial design of a character than by the scene change. As the expression can convey the mood of a scene better than a landscape. However, there are exceptions to everything.

Add to all of that the fact that the pacing is at a normal if not sluggish speed, & you get a manga that has an interesting aspect with a standard isekai fantasy story. It is an interesting case of being both refreshing to the genre while also being more of the same in some ways.

I would say, if you're waiting for an update to another manga, this one is good for passing the time until then. As there are a good number of chapters, though they aren't as thick as some other works.
